My Darling Clementine – June 13 at 7:30 PM

John Ford’s 1946 cinematic telling of a vital piece of American folklore-the Wyatt Earp story–was given a moody, melancholic treatment that elevated it out of the realm of patriotic folklore and into the realm of movie poetry. Henry Fonda gives perhaps the finest performance of his long career in the role of Wyatt Earp, a cattle herder who arrives in the troubled town of Tombstone for one night as a nobody. He ends up staying much longer than one night and becomes quite the somebody in town; the respected town marshall whose only adversary, Doc Holliday, may be more of a mirror image of himself than he first thinks and whose love interest, Clementine (Cathy Downs), may be the one thing that drives him out of town. My Darling Clementine is more than a historical artifact of Old Hollywood. It is a study of toxic male isolation and how loneliness is often the driving force of the American character. A Streetcar Named Desire ~ June 27at 7:30 p.m.

When the critic Pauline Kael first saw Marlon Brando onstage in the theatrical production of Tennessee William’s play A Streetcar Named Desire, she wanted to leave the theater. This was due to the fact that Brando emerged onstage in the throes of a seizure. As Kael describes it, it looked as though a grown man had just stumbled on to stage having a seizure and that somebody had to help him immediately. It took a few minutes before she realized that Brando was in fact performing for an audience as Stanley Kowalski, the violent alcoholic of William’s New Orleans love triangle.

Movies are more synthetic; we are in Plato’s cave; we know it’s all shadow puppetry. Yet Brando was one of the very few actors who manages to make us less sophisticated in this sense. We see him onscreen, sweating and collapsing on the pavement outside his girlfriend’s apartment building, and we’re not sure if we should rush into the screen to assist this man, or if we should head for the red exit sign with a ten foot pole. Of course, we do neither. We sit, riveted, for the two plus hours it takes for this claustrophobic, tragic drama to play out. A Streetcar Named Desire continues our summer of classic or near-classic American cinema and it continues our series of films that reveal something about not just America, but about the male American character. This said, the film is really about its two female leads, the disturbed Blanche DuBois and Stella Kowalski, her long-suffering sister.

Before entering the theater for this film: cup your hands, face the ceiling and yell, “Stellaaaaaa!” That, plus the $6.00, is your true price of admission.
